We knew Christmas was really all about eating, but Japan’s food traditions are a tad different from ours.

Instead of devouring a big old turkey, potatoes and lashings of gravy come Christmas Day, Japanese families will be tucking into the Colonel’s famous fried chicken.

Yep, we mean KFC.

No this isn’t a weird joke, according to KFC an estimated 3.6 million Japanese households will seriously be busy digging into buckets of fried Christmas food.

Rumour has it that the tradition started back in the early 1970s when one KFC employee overheard the conversation of an expat customer.

They were lamenting over how difficult it was to find a turkey in Japan for Christmas, a holiday that wasn’t really celebrated in the country, and that fried chicken was the next best thing.

We’re not sure why a roast chicken wouldn’t do the trick, but fried it was.

Because this was one attentive eavesdropping employee, the staff member reported the findings to management, which is said to have led to the launch of the first KFC Christmas in campaign in 1974.

And for some unknown reason everyone went mad for it.

Ever since 1974, ‘Kurisumasu ni wa Kentakkii’ or ‘Kentucky for Christmas’ has become a bigger and bigger phenomenon, with huge ad campaigns and the Colonel dressing up as Santa.

Which is terrifying.

People now pre-order their fried feast as far in advanced as October which typically includes a festive Party Barrel ranging from £22 to £27, filled with different layers including KFC Original Chicken, salad, ice cream and even a bottle of wine.

Sounds quite nice and all, but we think we’ll be sticking to turkey.
